Coaching Styles
There are a number of different coaching styles. Life coaching is realtively new but the idea of a life coach is
taken from sports coaches. If you are looking for information helping you understand exactly what a Life Coach does
then read on.
Perhaps you are thinking about hiring a life coach? Well the best way to understand coaching styles is look at
this list of the three main types of coaching:
For this list we use the UKA (UK Althletics) definitions.
These are the three main things coaches do:
- They tell - this involves giving instruction and explanation.
- They show - this involves demonstration
- They involve - this method of coaching promotes self discovery and
understanding and involves the use of questions to get the client to reflect, think and
come up with his or her own thoughts and solutions.
Modern Life Coaches normally use the third coaching style, that is the one where they involve. The coach asks
probing questions that make the client think for himself and consider his own solutions. The coach guides the
client but never tells him what he should do.
Occasionally this style of coaching may allow the coach to suggest possible courses of action or a different way
of thinking but only so the client may benefit from having another viewpoint. Any suggestions are meant to be
considered and it is for him to decide whether the idea or action would be suitable in his situation. A good coach
should also never lead the client into certain decisions. This coaching style gives responsibility to the client
and seeks to empower him.
