What is Coaching?

What is a Life Coach?

Coaching can be defined like this:

"helping people understand their strengths and weaknesses and to examine ways to build strengths into possibilities for positive action. Coaching involves identifying what stops a person from moving forward and discusses ways to remove these obstacles and sticking points. Coaching seeks to bring clarity and vision where there was confusion and indecision. Coaching is a partnership between client and coach and therfore choosing a coach that fits your personality is very important."

I hope you can see from above that good coaching will involve discussion. The job of a coach is like that in sport, he or she motivates and guides and examines possible strategies and ways to improve. The coach helps the client to make the most of what they have and offers experience. The coach, though, never tells the client what to do.

Effective Coaching

  • there must be trust between client and coach
  • the coach must understand the client well and empathize
  • equality needs to exist in the client coach partnership
  • concentrates on the present and how to change that to impact the furure in a positive way
  • challenging issues should not be ignored
  • acceptance of how things are now together with an openness of mind to accept that change is possible
  • willingness to try new ideas and ways of thinking
  • is a fruitful discussion that considers possible options
  • encourages a shift in thinking to allow positive change and movement towards goals
  • sets specific and achievable goals
  • seeks to discover what you truly want
  • removes unwanted beliefs and obstacles

How is Coaching Different to Therapy?

At times when I am coaching a client I find myself thinking a bit like a therapist but I stop myself because my job as a life coach is to look forward not backward. a therapist looks at problems caused in the past and tries to analyze and fix those problems. Coaching is about getting a student to take responsibility for his or her present situation and think about how they want things to change. The next step is to discuss with the client possible steps, goals and options for moving forward.

The relationship between Therapist and client is different than that between Life Coach and client. The first realtionship is as expert/ patient whereas the relationship in coaching is as partners.

Would you benefit from Coaching?

Would the following help you:

  • someone at your side to support you
  • someone who listens and encourages you to think of solutions
  • encouragement
  • motivation
  • someone to check you go through with the steps you set yourself
  • someone to discuss your choices
  • someone to help focus your thoughts on resolving issues
  • someone who cares about one thing: your success

If you answer yes to ANY of the above then yes, you would benefit from coaching!

Your life could be so much better with a bit of extra help from a coach who knows how to help you get the best out of your strengths.

So, the question is, what positive changes in your life do you want? What issues do you struggle with? Are you looking for more confidence and higher self esteem, more rewarding relationships or do you need to improve your communication skills? Are you shy, depressed or do you feel lost?
