What is a Life Coach?

A life coach is a professional who knows what it takes to break through life's challenges. He or she is also someone who works with those who want to improve his or her life. Often life improvement can mean change and coaches can help with important decisions and managing change.

What is Coaching?

What is a Life Coach?

Life coaches deal with specific areas of a client's life such as career change, relationships, finances and personal issues. Life coaches help guide you and discusses options with you. He or she should never tell you what to do but rather help you to reach a decision or course of action that is right for you.

Some of the issues that life coaches can help you with include managing stress, overcoming procrastination, building self esteem and self confidence, becoming more organized and setting goals.

Many successful people will tell you that one of the best weapons you could use to get your life on track is to hire a life coach.

What a Life Coach is not

  • a therapist - therapy and counseling involve going back into the past and bringing back the pain and events of childhood. Coaching looks at now and how to change your future.
  • someone who gives you all the answers
  • someone who tells you what you should or shouldn't do
  • someone who "fixes" you

Can you benefit from hiring a Life Coach?

Let's see....If any of the following would help you:

  • Boost self esteem and confidence
  • Improve your communication skills
  • Reduce stress
  • Create a better balance between work and life
  • Improve your career
  • Become healthier and fitter
  • Get clearer about what you want
  • Become better organized
  • Beat procrastination

 Then YES!

Characteristics of a good Life Coach

A life coach is someone who loves helping others achieve goals and will work tirelessly to help guide you in the right direction. He or she does this by asking deep and probing questions that get you to think. Listening is a huge part of what a coach does. The feedback that a coach provides and the fact that someone is investing time and effort to help you can be a great boost and wonderfully motivating.

When choosing a life coach there are some important things to think about. Consider all the information on the website and ask yourself if this person sounds like the kind of person who can help you. Remember coaching is a partnership. Make sure, as best you can, that the coach you choose has a recognized qualification (I for example, have a Diploma DipLC from the UK). What about experience? Has the prospective coach got any testimonials you can look at from satisfied clients? If so, check them. You can check out some of my client testimonials here.

The most important qualities in the coach you choose should be:

  • credibility
  • empathetic
  • professional
  • willing to work hard for you
  • won't judge you
  • doesn't offer false quick fixes
  • someone you can trust
